Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, India
‘Santila’ is a secluded Himalayan hill home for a family or a couple, where you will remain undisturbed by others and can travel around the area on foot. It is located in the midst of a pine forest, on a village road and is accessible by cars with good tyres, hence peaceful. We are located away from the main town and bazaar area. Should you wish to ‘do nothing’ on holiday and just experience 'the immersive lower Himalayas', then we are for you. Kasauli is an old British hill town, a cantonment and a former sanatorium for the British and Indian Royal Families to recuperate in the crisp and healing air of the lower Himalayan pine forests. Santila is a home and not a commercial establishment. We've opened our doors to share our space with like-minded individuals. Our home is for travelers whose souls ache for peace and solitude but then end up in just another hotel and not a home. We are not a hotel, motel or a guest house.. There is no-fuss service, no polished brass fittings, no Michelin star chef and no jacuzzi's. Our location is about twenty minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the main town. ‘Santila’ is an eco-friendly home with a simple yet contemporary Anglo-Himachali design. We will take you back into the era of self-exploration, adventure, rejuvenation and happiness in the simple things we have on offer. Our Suite - has a happy living room with a day bed, a humble collection of good reads and some satellite TV for some cozy nights at the movies. Value for Money
I have been brought up in the hills close to nature and away from city life. I wish to share my humble life with others and felt that big hotels and guest houses do not offer a homely and warm experience. We are involved with the guests staying with us and share our stories with them. I have also been a manager with the Oberoi Hotels and post that have operated hotels in remote areas - such as Rajasthan's wilderness to the Andaman Islands.
Reaching Santila and our location
Santila is located on a 2-kilometer adventurous rugged village road accessible by a car with good tyres (preferably SUV) in the midst of a pine forest. There are two villages in the vicinity and a natural spring nearby.
We are hidden towards the middle of the main Kasauli hill and connected to Garkhal by the ancient Mohan Meakin Brewery Road. If you hike up from Santila through the woods, you will reach the main Kasauli town.
If you hike downhill, you will cross farmland which meets a seasonal river at the base.
By Air – 1.5 hours from the Chandigarh International Airport. Daily connections from major Indian cities and International airports. A car and chauffer will be there to receive you on advance notice. Transfer charges applicable.
By Road – 6 Hours from New Delhi by Car – Lovely Highway with good eating joints. Pick up and homely accommodation can be organized at New Delhi.
We strongly recommend - Don't drive in the hills or try reaching us AT NIGHT. This is a No-No. Your safety is of prime importance and hill driving requires good concentration and light.
By Rail – Morning or Evening – Shatabdi Express, AC executive chair car with meals. Journey time – 5.5 hours. till Kalka Heritage Station. Should you choose the morning Shatabdi train, you can also reserve the seasonal Himalayan toy train till Dharampur (40 minutes from Santila). Otherwise, we shall receive you at Kalka. Transfer charges applicable.
To reach Kasauli’s market area and mall, a journey by car would take 20 minutes and hiking through the forest up – 45 minutes.
We can organize for taxi's (on a few hours advance notice) to take you to town. Its best not to take your own car, as parking is an issue in Kasauli Town.
For local flavour and experience - take the jolly village jeep service, where you will have the company of local villagers, some fresh milk and veggies. You may get invited for a drink by one of them. This service costs around Rs 40 - Rs 60 per person and runs from 8 morning to 6 evening at intervals of an hour.
